Lemonade usually starts lower on price and offers an AI-first claims app; Healthy Paws offers unlimited payouts and one simple plan. Both are pay-first and reimburse up to 90% on an annual deductible, so the right choice comes down to whether you want a low premium with add-ons you tailor, or truly uncapped coverage.

Cost: both start low, but differently
For a young pet, both are affordable. Lemonade is known for low starting premiums and lets you stack discounts by bundling. Healthy Paws can be competitive for young pets, but its price climbs steeply for senior dogs. We do not collect live quotes, so compare both for your own pet. The catch with Lemonade’s low headline: exam fees, dental and wellness are paid add-ons, so price the extras you actually want. Estimate your own number with our cost calculator.
Payout limits: Healthy Paws is uncapped
This is the biggest structural difference. Lemonade caps its maximum annual limit at $100,000; Healthy Paws is unlimited on every plan. For most pets $100k a year is more than enough, but for a catastrophic accident or a long, expensive chronic illness, Healthy Paws’ uncapped coverage removes the ceiling that a capped plan can hit.
Base plan vs add-ons
Lemonade keeps its base plan lean and sells the rest à la carte: vet exam fees, dental illness (with a $1,000 annual cap), behavioral/physical therapy and a wellness package are all optional paid add-ons. That’s flexible: you pay only for what you want. Healthy Paws takes the opposite approach: one plan that includes accidents, illness, cancer, hereditary and alternative care with unlimited payouts, but no add-ons at all and no coverage for exam fees or dental illness. So Lemonade can be tailored; Healthy Paws is take-it-or-leave-it simplicity.
Claims experience
Lemonade handles claims in its app, with AI doing the first review. Healthy Paws takes claims online or through its own app. Both are pay-first: you settle with the vet, then get your covered percentage back after the deductible, at any licensed vet.
Age & waiting periods
Neither is ideal for seniors. Lemonade won’t start new coverage for pets aged 14 or older in most states, and availability varies by state; accidents have a 2-day wait in most states and illnesses a 14-day wait. Healthy Paws waits 15 days for both accidents and illness (12 months for hip dysplasia) and limits options for pets enrolled after age 6. Enroll while your pet is young, since pre-existing conditions are excluded by both.
Which may suit you?
- Lemonade may suit you if you want a low entry price and an app-first experience, you’re insuring a younger pet, and you like adding exactly the coverage you want (dental, wellness) as optional extras.
- Healthy Paws may suit you if you want truly unlimited payouts for a worst-case illness, you prefer one simple plan with no add-ons to manage, and you’re enrolling before age 6.
